Alfonso Blanco, Executive Secretary of the Latin American Energy Organization: “Latin America has a significant concentration of hydroelectric energy; however, our efforts will focus on increasing the penetration of other renewable resources in the region such as wind, solar and geothermal ”

70 percent of the energy could be of renewable origin in 2030. The objective is found in the Renewable Energies program for Latin America and the Caribbean and to achieve the goal, the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) and the International Agency of Renewable Energies (IRENA), consolidate their collaboration ties.

The two multilateral organizations have signed a new agreement to work closely together in efforts to expand the deployment of Renewable Energies in Latin America, the agreement is based on a partnership signed in 2012, to strengthen public policy frameworks and stimulate investment in the zone.

Francesco La Camera, Director General of IRENA: “Latin America and the Caribbean is a vast region that possesses a significant amount of renewable energy and is presented with a compelling opportunity to lead the Energy Transition. This association will facilitate the achievement of the ambitious objectives of the region established within the framework of the Renewable Energies for Latin America and the Caribbean (RELAC) initiative, which aims at 70 percent of Renewable Energies in power generation by 2030 ”.

IRENA and OLADE pledged to work closely together last year as the COVID-19 outbreak threatened lives and economic growth. IRENA's analysis has shown that putting the transition at the center of the recovery could create more than three million regional jobs and offer economic returns of up to eight dollars for one dollar invested.

“Latin America has an important concentration of hydroelectric energy; however, our efforts will focus on increasing the penetration of other renewable resources in the region such as wind, solar and geothermal ”, continued Blanco. "In this context and within the framework of the ambitious RELAC initiative to achieve 70 percent Renewable Energy in power generation by 2030, we look forward to working closely with IRENA."Alfonso Blanco, Executive Secretary of the Latin American Energy Organization: “OLADE and IRENA share the belief that strengthening energy cooperation can foster sustainable development, help increase access to energy and promote the expansion of renewable energy projects in America. Latin and the Caribbean.
